Me Thinks:Go if you are the kind that enjoys slow and sensitive cinema. The autobiographical feel of the film will put off the masses and it is definitely not a commercial entertaining kind of film. The second half is even longer and most importantly, takes off on a completely different tangent.

The first half seems like it is a couple hours long and has four songs plus a bit song crammed in. Gautam Menon's direction drips with passion and here is one director that attempts to take Indian cinema further with each of his films. The music by Harris Jairaj is good, background score included. The cinematography by Ratnavel is top-notch and be it Chennai or San Fransisco, it is awesome all the way through. Simran pitches in with a nice performance, Sameera Reddy looks the part, Ramya redeems herself and the rest of the minor players acquit themselves well. Surya in his 60's look, in his teenager look, in his college boy look, in his drug addict look, in his armyman look – the film is almost like a showcase to Surya's acting skills and he does remarkably well.

What is Good: If ever there was a movie that an actor carried solely on his shoulders, this is it and Surya is the man. It is all about the trials and tribulations in the life of an everyday man, who could very well be your next door neighbor.

How Surya grows up taking his father as an inspiration, how he loves Meghna (Sameera Reddy), how he loses her, how he copes, how he succeeds, how he finds love again with Priya (Ramya) are all told from the perspective of the son. Though it is about the family, the main focus of the film is on the father son relationship. What is it about: The film is about a family of four – Krishnan (Surya), Malini (Simran), Surya (Surya again) and Shreya. Having gotten that out of the way, Surya S/O Krishnan is a classy film that will most certainly be rejected at the box-office but will find appreciation from the critics and the class audience For an actor to transform himself in so many different ways for a single film is amazing. Also, we will just say that when Gautam Menon said that after Kamal Hassan it was only Surya who could act in such a role, he was right. Production values are extraordinary.Starring : Surya, Sameera Reddy, Ramya, Simran and others. Cinematography by Ratnavelu captures the mood of the film. There are many English dialogues as well. Listening to the music of the film, nobody would have an iota of doubt about the strained relationship of Gowtam Menon and Harris Jayaraj. All three guitar based songs Yedane Koyake, Nalone Pongenu Narmada and Monna Kanipinchavu – are magnificent. The kidnap rescue episode and the war scene in the end slow down the pace of the film further. The entire romance thread between Sameera Reddy and Surya is excellent and extremely natural. The pace of the film is the major problem.

We can’t watch hero going through depression and resorting to drugs. What I did not like is the screenplay in the second half. I don’t find anything wrong with the direction as Gowtam Menon is just perfect in this film. And a semi-biographical story should be told with nice amount of dramatization like Mani Ratnam did for Guru film. People enjoy the good moments of life, but are little averse to the bitterness life offers. But making a biographical film in India has a strong drawback. Director tried to narrate the story of a life time in ‘Forrest Gump’ style.

Life is not like a box of chocolates it has many bitter moments too. It is pretty hard to incorporate a life story into 3 hour film. On a whole, Surya s/o Krishnan is a film that suffers from too much of realism and slow paced narration. Surya s/o Krishnan is a kind of film which you would like to watch it on a DVD for the depth it offers, but not in cinema halls where we watch films to get entertained. The negative points are unappealing second half and slow narration. The positive points of the film are Surya’s multifaceted performance, the romance with Sameera and the music. Semi-biographical films would not work in Telugu unless there are dramatic elements in it. But the second half is too slow and little boring. The first half of the film is nice with the romance between ‘Surya – Sameera’ being the highlight. The rest of the story is all about how his parents motivate to redeem himself. Something terrible happens and it forces Surya into a depression. He goes to the extent of going to USA to see that girl. Surya falls in love with Meghan who he met on train. For Surya, his father is a role model and a motivator. Krishnan becomes a more responsible person after giving birth to Surya (Surya).

Krishnan (Surya) loves Malini (Simran) and marries her.
